Scotland v Italy: An early battle on home ground? – Dr John Reid
(Halkett Hendrie Memorial Lecture)
John is Chairman of The Trimontium Trust, Melrose. Excavations at Burnswark Hill, Dumfriesshire, have revealed a greater number and variety of Roman missiles than anywhere else in Britain, while recent investigations and new techniques suggest this could be the site of one of the earliest conflicts between the Roman Empire and the Caledonians. John will bring us up-to-date with the results of the latest research.

Flodden: the Reason, the Result and the Consequences – Lord Joicey
Lord Joicey is the owner of Ford & Etal Estates (including the site of the Battle of Flodden Field) in Northumberland. He will discuss how international political intrigue preceded the battle, the tactics of winners and losers, the immediate and lasting consequences, and how a host of places in the Borders used the 500th anniversary in 2013 to deepen their association with Flodden and develop new research skills above and below ground. The Flodden 1513 Ecomuseum is the lasting legacy of this endeavour.
17 January 2017
The Crook Inn – its past, present & future – James Welch
James is Vice-Chairman of the Tweedsmuir Community Company. The Crook Inn probably started as a refuge for drovers and a meeting place for local shepherds in a relatively sparsely populated and lawless Tweedsmuir in the 16th century. James will run through the Crook’s fascinating history before going on to tell us about its decay during the 20th century, its acquisition by the local community and its planned resurrection.

Penicuik House and its Designed Landscape – Sir Robert Clerk (followed by AGM)
(Charles Morrison Memorial Lecture)
Sir Robert is the owner of Penicuik Estate, chair of Penicuik House Preservation Trust and Lord Lieutenant of Midlothian. Purchased in 1654, Penicuik House and grounds were designed by successive generations of the Clerk family, one of the most remarkable families in Scottish cultural history. A fire in 1899 destroyed the roof and interiors and left the once-magnificent building in ruins. In 1985, the Penicuik House Preservation Trust was created to consolidate the ruin. A new project was launched in 2015 to focus on restoring the many unique structures within the Designed Landscape. Sir Robert will bring us up to date on this exciting venture.
