The life, work and legacy of Sir Walter Scott

This talk will describe and discuss the biography of Sir Walter Scott, and his contribution to poetry, biography and historical fiction, beginning with Waverley. In particular, it will review his literary output on the Border Ballads, epic poetry from the Lay of the Last Minstrel to the Lady of the Lake. His biography of Napolean Bonaparte will feature, together with his autobiography as described in his Journal, edited by Sir Eric Anderson. Also covered will be his contribution to Scottish life and letters in general, specifically his conservation of our State Papers. All the foregoing will be placed in the context of his major position as one of the evening stars of the Scottish Enlightenment.

His residence in and contribution to the lands of Tweeddale will be discussed together with the continuing role of Abbotsford in the historical tradition of the Borders.
